Paul Klein

Operations Manager

Meet our CrossFit Coach! After working as a tire changer on the pit crew of an IndyCar team, I left my 16 year career in racing to pursue my passion in health and fitness. I worked as the Manager and Director of Training at a CrossFit gym before venturing out to start my own business with Ken “CJ” Crowder. Together, Ken and I have worked with athletes who perform at the top levels of sports, such as cross-country, rowing, NASCAR, BMX racing, soccer, football, wrestling, and baseball, not to mention countless other “weekend” athletes and people looking to improve their health.

About me: I am a husband, animal lover, lifelong motorsports fan, stock market watcher, meat eater, and bacon connoisseur.

Get fit at our CrossFit gym in Mooresville!Like most fitness enthusiasts, I lived in the illusion that is back/bis, chest/tris, legs/shoulders, and cardio. This methodology allowed me to reach a self-perceived high level of physical fitness. My fitness paradigm was completely shattered upon completion of my first CrossFit workout. As I ate my dose of humble pie, I realized that my definition of fitness was changed forever.

This seemingly simple workout left me more physically punished and more mentally taxed than any conditioning workout I had ever undertaken. All I knew was that I was in love with this concept and that I would never return to the conventional methods used by most of the exercising community. This new style of training has allowed me to reach a level of health and fitness I never thought possible. It has changed the way I view health, fitness, and wellness. It changes the way you think and the way you feel. Even better, CrossFit changes the way you look and move.

I will not promise you that the road to fitness, health, and results is easy. But I will promise you that the only surefire way to get healthy is to overcome your fears and to travel down that road. At CrossFit 77, you’ll find a family composed of people from all walks of life accomplishing things they never thought possible.

I only ask one thing of you; be willing to step out of your comfort zone and PERSEVERE.

Morning Head Coach / Head of Programming
prestaustI’m a lucky husband and a father to 3 amazing boys.
My favorite things in life are interacting with my family in nature. We’re big into fishing, hiking, and backcountry camping. I’m personally really into kayaking, especially kayak fishing at the moment.  I love seeing people express their fitness by getting outdoors, trying new things, and living life to its fullest. My background in fitness goes way back to being a 3-sport athlete from 5 years old throughout high school. After high school sports, I was lucky enough to be a scholarship athlete playing football at Tusculum College. After 2 seasons there, I returned to North Carolina and finished at UNCC with a degree in Communications. Through my years of high school and collegiate athletics, I had several very competent strength coaches that really made an impression on me and instilled work ethic. These coaches also educated me and gave me the foundations to being a coach today. After my athletic career was up in college, I was fortunate enough to continue training with current and prospective student-athletes, sharing my knowledge and maintaining my fitness. In 2006, my friend who was then deployed in Afghanistan with the Army, called me one day and asked me if I’d heard of Crossfit. He mentioned that many of the soldiers on his base were doing it. The next week I began working it in and have never looked back. In 2009, I became certified, and I’ve been coaching ever since. Over these past 7 years, I’ve been around some great individuals, learning more and more, which has allowed me to educate many awesome people in the Lake Norman community. The unbelievable staff at Crossfit 77 is a group that I Iook forward to working with, and with shared principals in fitness and nutrition across the board, I look forward to continue doing what I love a little further North on the lake.

Let our personal trainers show you the waySince I was a young kid, sports and fitness have always been driving forces in my life. Sports allowed me to participate at the highest level possible of football, wrestling, and track while in high school, garnishing state awards in all three, including a championship in wrestling. Knowing that I did not want to end my career there, I accepted a scholarship to play football at Catawba College. The next 4 years provided me with the chance to win a conference championship and the opportunity to intellectually grow while studying exercise science. After college, I accepted a role as a trainer at a nautilus gym to better equip myself with the environment of individuals who are not as acquainted with exercise and looking for those who are equipped with academic knowledge and experience that they can relate to. However, I knew this was not my calling. I knew I needed to be involved with something competitive, that I too could also get involved with, and CrossFit has provided that exact opportunity. Being a part of CrossFit not only allows to me quench my competitive thirst but I am now able to help those who seek the opportunity to positively improve their lifestyle and to coach and train kids and adults alike who seek a competitive edge. Crossfit 77 has allowed me to bring out my most inner passion about fitness, which is to have fun, as well as offer any and all guidance that I can to those willing to make themselves better

Gym Manager / Trainer

IMG_0461I grew up playing baseball and soccer all the way through high school, then decided to join the United States Air Force, and spent the next 7 years as a JTAC.  After several deployments overseas, I opted to separate to permanent civilian status.  After four long and weary years in corporate sales, I knew that there was something more out there for me and having a background in fitness and the love for competing in endurance events, I took a position as a personal trainer. Not too long after training individuals, I found CrossFit through a fellow trainer and that opened my eyes to a completely new world of helping people achieve their fitness goals.  Coming from an extensive endurance background, I knew the aerobic side of things all too well, but beyond that it was foreign.

I made it a personal goal to learn everything I could to allow me to be a better coach as well as an athlete.

11429973_10155709600850271_4680692890094741700_nAs a child, nutrition and exercise were not a priority in our house. My first introduction to fitness was when I joined the Army at 17. At that time, my diet consisted of Sonic milkshakes and cheap convenience foods. I was about 20 pounds overweight and so de-conditioned I couldn’t run the perimeter of a building without throwing up. During the 8 weeks of basic training, I lost 15 pounds and could breeze through the push-ups, sit-ups, and 2-mile run. During that 8 weeks, I began to understand what my body was capable of accomplishing and the mental attitude it takes to get it done.
I have been challenging myself ever since. It doesn’t always come easy, but anything’s possible if you are willing to give it all you’ve got. As a personal trainer, my goal is to help my clients realize their true potential, both physically and mentally. From my own personal experience, I KNOW anything is possible, and I believe it to be true for anyone with the strength to believe in themselves!

Dana Mather

Dana Mathers_2655Being physically active began as soon as I was able to walk. My dad spent countless hours playing outside with me, teaching me how to throw a football, shoot a basketball, and hit a softball. At the age of 5, I began gymnastics and was a competitive gymnast until the age of 14. My high school years included basketball, cross country, track, and travel softball.

Like most women; however, after getting married and having 3 boys in just 4 years, my well-being took a back seat for several years. It wasn’t until 2012, that I walked through the doors of Crossfit 77, having never heard of Crossfit or functional fitness. From the first class, I knew this is where I belonged. The depth of knowledge and competitive component of Crossfit 77 awoke a part of me that had been dormant for years. Since then, I have competed in Crossfit competitions, become a coach, and was even hired as an extra in the Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2! All of this has been possible because of Crossfit 77 and I plan to pay it forward as long as God enables me.

“That’s it, enough is enough”
1098006_709390889077796_631403870_nThis was the thought that screamed at me when I turned 45. I was always a gym rat when I was younger, but as it usually happens, life got in the way. Started a business, got married, had kids, and before I knew it, 15 years had gone by. Each year I got a little less active, gained a few more pounds, and at 45, I was finally fed up. I was constantly tired even though I wasn’t very active, and to make matters hit home even more, my wife had gotten herself in incredible shape. She had discovered Crossfit, and after about a year, had made a complete transformation. I thought, “If she could do it, so could I.” It was intimidating walking in to do my first WOD and seeing all these fit people, but everyone was so welcoming and so supportive. I thought, “wow, there is some magic happening here.” I was hooked and have been ever since. Here it is almost 5 years later, I have my Crossfit Level 1 Certification, and I am lucky enough to coach at a facility that is second to none when it comes to the knowledge base of all the coaches, as well as the amazing sense of community that is apparent every day. As the oldest coach age-wise, I get a special thrill when people my age come in and are ready and willing to make a truly life-altering change. It is never too late. The journey continues.

About me: Transplanted lifetime NY’er loving Carolina living, avid golfer, former drummer and piano player, lover of clever humor.

Director of Project Momentum Fitness & Outreach

I am a mom, a wife, a nurturer & an education professor at Belmont Abbey College.  I have always been fascinated by anything related to development, cognition, & behavior—teaching & learning are as natural & necessary as breathing for me.  I have happily spent my life becoming intellectually strong & helping others to do the same.  But, I have cerebral palsy so also have spent my life believing physical strength was an exclusionary, unattainable concept for me.   I was only as active as I had to be & simply survived the reality of my painful, frustrating physical world. My physical health was in shambles so my emotional health was in crisis.  Although I was at the height of success in my career & loved by an extraordinary family, I was at rock bottom in my health & felt completely alone.  My work suffered, my marriage suffered, my parenting suffered, my relationships suffered. On December 3, 2013 that all changed.   Fifty pounds overweight, I stumbled into Crossfit77 to ask about a fitness membership. I asked for help.  Armored behind leg braces & canes I steeled myself for them to say NO because I was too “risky,” too “broken,” too “disabled.” Instead, they simply said, “Let’s get to work.”  And work we have. My health, work, family, & life have been completely transformed by functional fitness training at Crossfit 77.

On that day, I promised myself that I would do everything in my power to pay it forward.  To use every tool in my toolbox to build the same opportunities for others.  To apply every skill I had to make health & fitness possible for everyone– even the “risky,” the “broken,” & the “disabled.”  The momentum since has moved mountains.

(I am also a coffee addict, adventurous cook, dog lover, theatre geek, digital media fiend, avid reader, oratory & debate champion, former hand model who has a thing for Bon Jovi & high heels.)

To those who much is given, much is expected.

Tyler Crump

Evening Head Trainer / Facility Manager

I was born and raised in Charlotte. I was never really into athletics until I started playing football in the 6th grade. Football sparked a love of athletics and competition in me and I continued to play through my freshman year of college. After hanging up my pads, I began to focus on pursuing fitness and health instead of performance. I have battled with my weight throughout my entire life but it wasn’t until I found CrossFit that I found the consistency, nutritional strategies, and programming to lose the weight and KEEP it off. I love and believe in CrossFit. It worked for me and I know it can work for you.

I love tossing weights around with other people, but I also love sitting down with someone over a meal and hearing their story.
